Eagle sculpture from Valatie's memorial to WWI veterans

In the summer and fall of 1999, area Boy Scout Robert Dybas conducted a survey of Valatie cemeteries. Carried out with guidance from village historian Dominick C. Lizzi, the purpose of the study was "to identify, locate, record and map the veteran's graves in the Prospect Hill, St. John the Baptist and Woodlawn cemeteries." All three cemeteries are located in the Village of Valatie. Through observation of the dates and other information noted on the grave markers - some dating back to the Civil War - Robert was able to also determine and record the specific wars of which the deceased are veterans. A copy of the resulting directory of the deceased veterans, including maps of their locations in the individual cemeteries, is available for reference at the Valatie Library.

As part of its ongoing celebration of Valatie's 150th anniversary - and in grateful tribute to Valatie-area veterans - the Valatie library is pleased to make available an on-line summary of the listing of all the veterans included in Robert's directory, with references to the locations of their grave sites. It is available here in two formats:

A downloadable "eBook" of the complete directory will be available soon.
